When children are able to look within they become more self aware. Self awareness in toddlers can look like identifying their emotions and expressing them, knowing the differences between themselves and other people, showing confidence in their own abilities, and being able to manage their behavior. This skill can be learned through conversation, journaling, reading books and more. This post will share some questions that you can ask your child that will help them self reflect and become more self aware.
How are you?
Such a simple, everyday question. The important part is to listen and ask questions or make statements to show your little one that you understand them and are paying attention. Expand on this by talking about how you are feeling.
What did you do today?
This is a question that children may began to answer with words at about age 3. Asking your child this question allows them to think about their day and to recall past activities.
How did that make you feel?
When you see your little one upset and you’ve already asked what’s wrong, now ask “How did that make you feel?” This question can help children learn how to talk about their emotions and be able to identify them.
What is your favorite thing to do?
Self-awareness is all about knowing ourselves, knowing our likes and dislikes. Asking this question can help children learn more about themselves and I’m sure you’ll learn something as well.
These questions are just topic starters to get your child talking. As you begin to build upon these questions you will notice how much your child has learned about themselves. Consistency is key, make conversations an important part of your relationship.
