A few weeks ago I posted an article about strategies to help children learn how to manage their behavior. One of the strategies listed was creating a safe space. This post will go more in detail on how to create the space in your home.
So, what is a safe space? A safe space is a quiet area in the home where a child can go when they are managing their emotions and actions. In case you missed my earliest post about safe spaces you can find it here. Let’s get to it. Here are some things you should know about creating this space in your own home.
Find a quiet area
This space should be in a quiet area of the home. Think about a shared family space where your little ones can also play. Wherever you decide, put the space off in a corner, but you still want your child to be able to see you and you should see them. I recommend creating a physical space where a child can go inside if they decide to. Something like a tent. That way it’s private and can really feel like a different space.
Make it cozy
We want to create a relaxing and calm vibe. When deciding what textures to use, think about soft, plushy, or furry materials. You can add throw pillows, favorite blankets, stuffed animals and more. Think about what colors bring you calm. Try pastel colors like blue, yellow, grey, lilac etc. Keep it simple, don’t overload the space with too many things or with busy prints. Don’t forget the scent, try spraying the space with scents like jasmine or lavender.
Add books and other things
Add things to the space that can help your little one calm down. Some things you can add are notebooks and pens, sensory bottles, headphones, books about emotions, mirrors and more. Be sure to put things your child likes and things you know can help them calm down.
Introduce the space
A safe space is NOT a form of punishment, but rather a space a child can go to woo-sah after being overwhelmed. This space should be enjoyable and have positive connections. Think about when a parent sneaks to the bathroom for 5 minutes of silence, just to reset before returning to life. The safe space is the same idea for children. Talk to your child about the space and how it can be used. Explore all parts of the space. Take some time and visit the space together until they are comfortable going on their own.
Stay tuned for the next post where I will talk in more detail on how to implement the use of a safe space. For now have fun creating this unique area your child will love.
